Events Beyond WCP
WCP families often keep spending time together beyond playgroup. When someone is looking for a local plan, a few programs and community events tend to make the shortlist. This short list is for current members, alumni, friends, neighbors, and anyone else looking for family-friendly things to do nearby.
These programs and events aren't organized by WCP. Check with each host for current schedules, registration, costs, and other details.
Waltham Community Events
Waltham's community calendar fills up throughout the year with things that are easy to turn into a family outing. Around the Common and elsewhere in the city, you'll find concerts, recreation events, community festivals, and annual celebrations. Pride, Juneteenth, RiverBeat, fireworks, the Common Block Party, Spring Fest, and similar standouts give a good sense of the mix without being the whole list.
These are the kinds of plans that come up often when WCP families trade ideas, especially when an outdoor meet-up sounds good. Rather than repeat changing dates here, the City calendar is the better place to see what's actually coming up and check location, timing, weather updates, and other event details.
Waltham Public Library
For families with very young children, the Waltham Public Library is one of those places worth checking before a quiet morning turns into “what should we do today?” Its recurring children's schedule includes Baby Storytime, Toddler Time, Family Storytime, and Te Cuento Un Cuento, a storytime held entirely in Spanish.
The calendar also mixes in one-off family programs—performers, live animals, outdoor activities, and special children's events—so there's often something beyond the regular storytimes. They're an easy way to work a little structure into the week, and the mix changes over time. Home Depot Kids Workshops
Home Depot's Kids Workshops are a recurring hands-on option for children who are ready to use simple tools with an adult. The in-store workshops are typically held on the first Saturday of each month, with a different small build each time. Children work through the project with a parent or guardian and take the finished project home.
This one tends to be more useful as kids get a little older: Home Depot describes the program for ages 5–12, so it isn't a fit for WCP's full age range. Families with older preschoolers or elementary-age siblings may want to keep it in mind. Workshops are free and supplies can be limited; advance registration is useful. Gore Place
Gore Place works well both when you want a scheduled family program and when you just need somewhere pleasant to wander. Its family offerings include Puppet Playtime, babywearing tours, and family programs and festivals. Outside of scheduled events, families can visit the farmyard animals, follow the Story Trail, spread out for a picnic, or simply explore the grounds, which are free to visit.
That flexibility is part of the appeal: you can plan around a program or keep the outing casual if naps, weather, or moods change the day.
